The Squirrels in our Life
Today’s focus is on the squirrels, which make their home in our region. Walking through the local woods, you will find that it is one of the most common animals. In our backyards they often become a nuisance stealing hazelnuts in the fall and raiding the bird feeders in the winter. However, no matter where you spot them, they look cute and they always appear adorable on the close-ups. Enjoy!

To gauge a little more accurately the scores for the pictures for last week’s photos, I used a mathematical approach with the following formula. First, second and third choice was given 5 points, 3 points and 1 point respectively. There were more than 20 participants for last week’s evaluation, which yielded the following results.
- #1 – 19 points View from the Nakusp Promenade
- #2 – 35 points Dragon Teeth
- #3 – 22 points Evening Light
- #4 – 33 points Log Booms encased in Ice
- #5 – 13 points Sunset at Fauquier BC

I also took some photos of squirrels in Fuerteventura in December.
A single squirrel appeared to be really shy. I couldn’tl lure it to my place. Only later I found a whole community of them some 100 metres away from this place.

Peter, only you are successfull enough to take Squirrel photographs. I tried and tried, but they move too fast for my outdated camera 🙂 Great job and the creature is super cute.

Oh, thank you! I really appreciate your compliment. With squirrels one needs to be patient. Eventually they stop scampering around and come to rest on a tree stump or branch.

These are great shots – I especially like the last one, with the grasses and the squirrel’s tail standing straight up. They can be real pests, but they are undeniably cute.

The last one is also my favourite photo. They are indeed very cute and when together in groups can be extremely playful.

I think they’re cute—until they get too close! Then they look like rats with fluffy tails.

While camping I had one squirrel running up and down my pant leg. That was scary!!!

So cute! We have a few favorite squirrels that regularly visit our “bird” feeders 🙂 Love the first photo!

Some bird feeders are squirrel proof. I don’t mind these cute little critters, there is always enough food for all in our bird feeders, as long as they stay away from our nut trees.

Wow, they are all great! After scrolling back and forth I would say 2-4-3. In number 2 I find the green especially eyecatching.

So I know the scoring has ended, but I had to chime in because the two that I REALLY loved were the lowest scoring – 5, and 1.
but number five was my fav – for originality and uniqueness (whereas 1 seemed rather typical – the busy tail – cute profile – side shot – but still vivid and showed the cuteness) – but 5 was the one I kept going back to – the verticals from the grasses sorta play with the hair fromt he tail – and the pale yellow hue is inviting – and the mixed foliage is all of interest on that solid horizon. How could that be so liked by me and then rank so low?
well to each their own, eh?
and side note- my spouse’s grandparents had some serious problems with their squirrels – so as you note – cute but can be annoyance

Absolutely lovely photos, Peter. Well done! Who can resist them, looking so cute.
In England we hardly have any red squirrels because of the grey ones, which I think is really sad.
You can”t beat them can you. I have given up chasing them away from the “bird island” in our garden. They are funny and adorable and I try not to watch when they pinch more than they can eat.

I don’t mind the squirrels. I make sure birds and squirrels alike have enough to eat. Just bought another bag of sunflower seeds. It is still unusually cold for this time of the year. Warm greetings! Peter
