A Video Supplement to our Feathered Friends
Here is a very short video clip I shot with my Canon video camera a few years ago. As I pointed out before, it is important to set up the bird feeders in late fall, so our feathered friends discover the source of food early and make it their main feeding station. As you can see from the many visitors, the bird feeder in our backyard was indeed a major attraction. Enjoy.
How close to the feeder were you standing? I assume you had a zoom because I can’t imagine the birds coming too close if you were nearby.

This video was shot with a zoom setting. But I have been just a few inches away from the feeder and birds were sitting on my hat, nose, camera, one bird actually swinging on the camera strap. The secret: Let the birds see when you fill the feeder and stay at the feeder until they overcome their fear.

I have a feeder right outside our kitchen window. Your picture is a better view than I have with the feeder being so close. I enjoy the photographs you have shared in many of your blogs.

Nice video. I have never done this ever. I’m sure feeding birds must be a calming experience.

Our birds here need food to survive in the long Canadian winter. Indeed it is a very calming activity to help our feathery friends.

A delight indeed to watch them feed, so much more peaceful than to watch television.

Never seen like this before. Normally I saw people feeding the birds by putting them only on the ground. Thanks for sharing this experience with us, Peter…

What lovely footage, Peter – thank you for sharing it. Excuse my ignorance from another hemisphere, but what sort of birds are they?

No excuse necessary. I am not very good with naming birds either. These birds belong to the cross beak family and are very common in our area. They stop by at my bird feeders only in winter.

Thanks for letting me know – it’s great that you have a welcome spot for them to pause on their way through!
