Sunflowers and Bumblebees
One of the least demanding flowers, thriving in poor soil and growing to incredible heights, is the sunflower. When a volunteer plant pushed through the loose gravel on the south side of our house, my wife felt inspired by this unexpected appearance of a Russian sunflower and transplanted a whole bunch of ornamental sunflowers from a barrel of dirt where she had started them from seeds. The result of her labours is today’s post on these marvellous flowers, which not only decorated the windowless wall, but also attracted bumblebees and other insects. Enjoy.
These are terrific shots! The flowers are beautiful, but I actually like the unopened one a lot. I know it’s a good thing, but whenever I see these bees, with pollen all over them, I always want to call them over, sit them down, and give them a good brushing. 🙂

Many thanks for your insightful comment, Robert! As to the bees, I sometimes wonder if they are able to fly after wallowing knee deep in the pollen.

Yes! They need a scale, like the airlines, to weigh up all this baggage before taking off!

I surely did. Ours look similar, but a bit more scruffy, I should say, haha. They grew every which way this year! Not very photogenic, but apparently tasty to the gold finches.

They are so beautiful, like miniature suns! I have one in the flower bed, self sown from the bird feeder. The multicoloured ones are amazing!

That’s exactly what gave my wife the idea to put seeds in the ground. A seed had randomly been dropped on the ground and sprouted against all odds. Thank you for your kind words, Brigit!

Yes, the colour and shape almost lend human qualities to the sunflower. Thank you for the kind compliment, Cornelia!

My favourite is the last one. These are lovely blooms. Will this “happy” season last for another 3 months?

I wish it would. Unfortunately, in another 3 months we will be seeing the first snow in the area where we live here in Canada.
