Mushroom Fever in the Fall
The mushroom season is over now. The local buyers have closed their shops. It has been a good year. The Pine mushrooms have been bountiful in spite of the extremely dry conditions in the summer and early fall. In the basket you see a very fine collection of No. 1 rated mushrooms (buttons) that were selling this year for about $20 a pound. It always brings excitement and joy to us after Gertrud (Biene) has been combing the local forests for these precious fungi. To highlight the season I wrote this poem a few years ago. Enjoy.

It sounds like Biene had a treasure hunt for the button mushrooms and I am sure you both enjoyed the fruit of her labor. They are sure to be delectable due to their $20 a pound price. Peter, enjoyed your poem.

The Japanese are craving for these mushrooms. The exported Pine mushrooms sell for hundreds of dollars in Japan.

I can’t relate if $20 is a good price. we buy them for $3 for 2.20 pounds!

That’s a nice poem, Peter, but shouldn’t the first word in line 7 of your poem be “buttons” instead of “buttocks?”

I know ‘buttocks’ sounds a bit crude, a nicer word in German, for which I found no English equivalent, is Popo. These special mushrooms often come in pairs and so created that particular image in my mind. Thanks for the compliment!

For good mushrooms you have to pay good money!! Like in Germany for Pfifferlinge, I guess Chanterelles oder Steinpilze ( don’t know the English translation) they are weight by grams. Biene seems to be a great “finder”

These mushrooms are a special kind over which the Japanese are crazy about and pay incredibly high prices.

Hier sind die Champignons wirklich sehr billig, kosten so 1,20 Euro die Packung. Aber toll, dass Biene so viele gefunden hat. Gab sicher ein leckeres Essen. Liebe Grüße aus Hamburg,

Nur wenige dieser Pine Pilze bleiben bei uns zum Verbrauch. Sie werden fast ausschließlich nach Japan exportiert. Meine Frau und ich behalten den Ausschuss, trocknen die Pilze oder braten sie in der Bratpfanne. Liebe Grüße! Peter
