Canoe Trip on Whatshan Lake
Thousands of Frames Make a two-minute Video
On Monday my wife and I took the ferry across the Lower Arrow Lake and travelled with our canoe to the nearby Whatshan Lake, a mere 4 km distance from Fauquier. Surrounded by forested hills, the 30 km long lake is actually comprised of two lakes connected by a narrow and winding channel. The boat launch not far from the public beach was virtually deserted so late in the summer season. Biene and I knew that we would have the lake almost entirely to ourselves. Bent on relaxation with a chance to capture the wild scenery on our cameras, we let the electric motor do the ‘paddling’ for us. Here is the video of our exploratory canoe trip. Enjoy.
How lovely! And the musical accompaniment was perfect (Peer Gynt?). It must have been a very serene experience.
But…how did you manage to paddle AND hold the camera so still??

We did not paddle. We let the electric motor do the work. Haha!

LOL! No wonder!

Oh, by the way, you guessed Peer Gynt correctly.

Well, just as you didn’t really paddle, I didn’t really guess! I have an app on my phone that identifies music. I knew it was familiar, but couldn’t place it. SoundHound to the rescue!

I looked up the etymology of schweben,
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/schweben,
which seems to be the cognate of native English swoop.

Wunderbar beruhigend.

What a beautiful and peaceful treat you shared here, Peter, along with that piece of music I am so very familiar with, for the moment it skipped my mind of the name. I am just having a senior moment, haha. Is it the Swan from Tschaikowsky? Maybe not? Enjoy all your further excursions in the nature.

Thank you, Cornelia, for your kind comment! It is always appreciated. The music is by the composer Peer Gynt. The Swan from Tchaikovsky would have been a good choice for the accompanying music too.

Oh of course it’s Peer Gynt

You guys have a nice slice of canoe heaven there.

Canoe heaven is the right term for this particular jewel of a lake.

Very serene video, Peter. Looks like you covered a lot of area with that little electric motor. I know from experience that getting video isn’t a worthwhile venture while paddling!

Capturing the scenery with a video camera requires to have your hands free. Also the almost silent motor in low speed allows me to get much closer to wildlife. Thanks for the kind comment, Des!

I am so glad you liked the video. I am always careful in selecting the kind of music which creates the right atmosphere for the scenery.

The fact that Whatshan Lake and Upper Arrow Lake are oriented north-south makes me suspect they were carved out by glaciers.
Autumn must be fast approaching up there.

Even though it is late in the summer season, we are still experiencing hight temperatures and lots of sunshine in our neck of the woods.

Your neck of the woods must be happy indeed with the sunshine and high temperatures. Soon enough your neck will need a scarf around it to stay warm.

..ne, echt. Das tat super gut. – Bin gerade viel unterwegs…
PS: Du, da fällt mir gerade was ein…

Stimmt, DAS ist echt lange her.
