Stellar Jay’s Photo Session
Stellar jays are extremely wary and skittish birds, especially when they notice your camera pointing in their direction. To distract them from my presence, I put a few sunflower seeds onto the top rung of my stepladder. It worked! Here is my photo story. Enjoy.

What do I see? Sunflower seeds, my favourite snack.
I wonder if they are safe to eat.

was für ein toller Wicht! Schön, konntest du ihn überlisten. Ein bisschen erinnert er mich an die hiesigen Eichelhäher, aber die haben nicht diese feine Haube. Kennst du zufällig den deutschen Namen für ihn?

Der Name im Englischen ist Steller Jay (nicht Stellar, wie ich geschrieben habe) und ist nach dem deutschen Biologen Steller benannt, der diesen Vogel beschrieben hat. Der deutsche Name ist Diademhäher. Liebe Grüße!

Thanks for the comment! In the meantime I found out that the correct spelling of these birds is Steller Jays, named after a German biologist.

These critters have a bad reputation in our neighborhood. They tend to attack the nests of other birds and then eat their eggs. My neighbor got so mad when he witnessed this behavior in his own backyard that he picked up a rock and threw it at the jay. Unfortunately. his aim was wide and he broke his own window!

I agree, they are not only a nuisance, but they also dominate the access to the bird feeder and don’t let the little birds come near, for which the sunflowers seeds were intended. I have to buy a new bird feeder.

These are beautiful birds. Yes, they have a rap sheet but in the winter they are gorgeous color in the snowy terrain. Great shots Peter!

I need to install a new bird feeder, because the jays do not let the little chicadees and nuthatches come near to the feeder i am using right now.

Some birds can become very territorial about such things – sharing doesn’t seem to come into it. Good luck!
