Of Tree Stumps, Mushrooms and Ferns
While my wife has been picking pine mushrooms in our nearby forests, I have been searching for objects that typically represent the autumn scene in our area. Old tree stumps and tree trunks have always fascinated me, as they so wondrously symbolize the end and the beginning of a new life cycle. Mushrooms are pushing through the forest floor to release their spores for the next growing season. Ferns are bending low under the weight of old age while retaining their graceful shapes of geometric patterns for us to admire. Of course, the brightly shining sunflower wheel must always be part of the visual presentation of the wonderful autumn season. Enjoy.

I remember you recommending that, a couple of years ago, when I was taking photos of tiny mushrooms in the woods. It worked out very nicely here.

Every photo has something to offer. Like Rob, I enjoyed the ferns, and that remarkable sunflower. It looks as though it’s still in the process of developing, rather than fading.

Alas, the beautiful sunflower in our frontyard has faded and succumbed to the first frost and snow.

These are beautiful photos, and the colors in them all make a great collage of autumn colors—golds, browns, yellows, and even a tinge of green.

Wonderful pictures. I wish I knew which mushrooms are edible. I really need to learn, we’ve got plenty growing in the area.

Learn to identify first those that are edible and distinctly different from all the other mushrooms to avoid eating a poisonous one. Thank you for your kind comment, Debra!

Beautiful pictures, Peter! It looks like British Columbia is very calm during the Fall. Here in Northern California our week began with high, dry winds and power outages and fear of more wildfires. Pretty calm today, though. Maybe we will be more like British Columbia the rest of the week!

What a visual treat this forest presents. My favorite is the second one. There must be many varieties of mushroom, how does one find out which one is edible?

The best approach is to know the good edible varieties and for your safety leave the other mushrooms alone. We eat the pine mushrooms, the chanterelles and the lobster mushrooms. They grow in abundance here and are delicious.
