My Friend The Prairie Dog
My wife and I have been camping for about a week at Arrow Lake, where we found relief from the unbearable heat at home. Forest fires are burning again. But we are fortunate this year. None of the BC forest fires are very close to us and do not endanger our little community. While relaxing in the cool breeze, I notice a gopher (prairie dog) cautiously approaching me. As it peered over a log and looked at me for a long time, I quickly got my camera out. Instead of running away it came closer and closer. Obviously, it recognized me as the friendly human from the previous year. After a few minutes, it was posing for a portrait less than a metre away. Enjoy.

Oh, that’s so sweet! But be careful, Peter. I did that with one of my squirrels and it bit me (more out of fear than aggression), but then I had to worry about rabies. These little critters do sometimes carry rabies, and you can’t take a chance on that. Wear leather gloves if you really want to feed them. It’s a great feeling though, isn’t it, when they come so close.

How cute and considerate of the prairie dog to pose! Enjoy your camping. Hopefully it is cool at the site, I never liked camping in the brutal heat.🥵

Its appearance (coat, tail) are slightly different from our Texas species, but there’s no mistaking that pose of alert curiosity. Wonderful photos!

I am quite envious whenever I see somebody have photographs of prairie dogs.As I child I loved seeing nature programs that featured them and think you are very lucky to have them trust and visit you while camping.

These are wonderful close-ups, Peter. So glad the fellow didn’t feel threatened and came so close. Your camping trip at Arrow Lakes sounds like a wonderful escape. I hope the fires will be extinguished soon.
