In Search of Colour in Late Autumn

It is not always easy to find a splash of colour in the late autumnal landscape in the greyness of a November day. Today I focus on two flowers that managed to show their vivid colour literally at winter’s doorsteps. I found the candle-like lamb’s ear at the edge of a forest and the hardy and invasive species of a knapweed flower. Always attracting our attention are the omnipresent rose hips in our area. The red berries of the mountain ash, a favourite food item among migratory birds, and many other colourful fruits are brightening up the otherwise gloomy scene. I hope that the images will bring some cheer into your life at the beginning of the Advent season.

A splash of dark red is always welcome in a world turning grey.

Lakeshore Impressions on a Grey November Day

About 60 km south of Nakusp on Highway 6 lies the small community of Fauquier, where the free ferry takes you across the Lower Arrow Lake. Here at one of the most beautiful locations in the West Kootenays my wife and I have been living and raising our family since 1976. Today I take you down for a stroll along the lakeshore not far away from the popular 9-hole golf course and boat dock.

Enjoy the tour!

Bayview Estates 10 km South of Nakusp

As you turn south from Nakusp on Highway 6 you will come to a viewpoint, which grants a superb look at Saddle Mountain high above the Arrow Lake. Not far from this point turning right to a winding road to the beach, you enter the secluded residential area known as the Bayview Estates. Here I stopped by on a November day to take a few pictures of the stunning scenery.

Whatshan Lake, the Little Gem in the Kootenays

Wednesday’s Photos

On a grey late October Day my wife, our youngest son, his partner and I went to explore the area at  Whatshan Lake. It is located north of Fauquier and only a few miles from the Arrow Lake. Although it was foggy, the light was perfect for taking some photos, which prove that the world can still be colourful so far advanced into the fall. I hope you will enjoy the sample of images.

Above the Nakusp Hot Springs leads a trail to the bridge over the Kuskanax Creek. Its crisp and clean mountain waters tumble down and join the Arrow Lake at the picturesque town of Nakusp. Let’s take walk there and enjoy the amazing scenery.
