Wednesday’s Photos
Steller’s Jays in our Yard
With wild hazelnuts dropping en masse to the ground and elderberries ripening on the bush, it is heaven for the steller’s jays. They are usually very wary of anyone pointing the camera at them. But their greed and competition from other jays make them let their guard down just enough so I could get a few good shots in. Here they are. Enjoy.

What a beautiful bird! Great photos, Peter!

They are so beautiful and so different from the blue jays we see here on the east coast. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve never seen one of these birds, or tasted an elderberry. The hazelnuts are what we called Filberts when I was growing up. They came in bags of fancy nuts-in-the-shell at Christmas time, and more often than not I’d end up asking some big person to crack the Filberts or the Brazil nuts. It was a hard job even for me. You might enjoy this short piece about the two-names-for-one-nut.

Here is my wife’s advice to you if you ever find an elderberry bush and are tempted to eat the ripe berries. They are very poisonous when eaten raw, but cooked and made into a soup they are delicious.

Now, that’s news I can use! Thanks for the tip!

ps – I guess eating too many of these raw berries could reduce the number of elders!

Elderberries and Covid, what a toxic mix for the elders!

Lovely captures. Do these birds migrate during the winters?

No, they are hardy and stay throughout the winter.
