Wednesday’s Photos
Two Moose Having Breakfast
Last Sunday my wife and I went to our favourite outlook to capture a few wildflowers. We were very happy with the results and were eager to rush home to view and edit the photos for publication. On our way home, we drove by the nearby duck pond. To our great surprise, we spotted two moose leisurely munching away at the delicious leaves. It was unbelievable luck to see them so close and to have my movie camera with me as well. So I decided to publish the video instead and leave the wildflower photos for next Wednesday. Enjoy.

Hallo Peter, ja da kann man wirklich von großem Glück sprechen so nahe an Elche ran zu kommen. Noch dazu wenn man auch die Kamera dabei hat 😉 Schöne Bilder. Liebe Grüße nach Kanada. Wolfgang

Nice video, Peter, with the hungry moose. Did not know you had moose, as they are very common in Alaska. Have a great week capturing the beauty around you!

I’ve never seen a moose in the wild. I know how big they can be. It must have been an exhilarating experience, Peter!!

Very nice, Peter, but a tad too short! I was enjoying listening to the William Tell Overture!

Das war dann doppelte freude: zunächst die wildblumen, dann die Elche.
Manchmal wird man reich beschenkt!!

What a treat for you both and all of us, Peter, thank you for always sharing your splendid captures. By the way, the music along with the video sounded so familiar to me, but I couldn’t quite track down what beautiful piece it is?
Enjoy your nature that surrounds you.

Moose always make me laugh. I don’t know if it’s because of their made-by-a-committee appearance, or those Bullwinkle cartoons, or just the surprise of such a large creature moving relatively gracefully, but they’re wonderful. I’m so glad you had this experience with them, and thought to share it with us.

I’d forgotten that the German word for ‘moose’ is Elch. That’s the cognate of English Elk, which is different from a moose. I wondered how the English and German cognates came to have different meanings, and I found the interesting explanation in the Word History section at

The Germans often use the Elke when they mean Moose. They may be forgiven because of the similarities in the two words.

How fun to see them so close and have the ability to take the video! Thanks for sharing. I’ve never once seen a moose, in the wild or at a zoo.

I doubt if moose would survive very long in captivity. They are truly wild animals.

Having seen moose in Northern Maine several times, your video brought back the feeling of watching these wonderful animals in their habitat eating and moving through the woods. Very nice share, Peter!
