Autumn Afternoon at Whatshan Lake
On October 15, a bright sunshiny day that felt more like summer than fall, my wife and I went again hunting for chanterelle at a nearby mountain lake. While we did not find many mushrooms so late in the season, we enjoyed a picnic at a tiny beach framed by forests and the brilliant blue sky. The sky’s reflections on the crystal-clear water transported us into a dream world rarely encountered on our troubled planet. Whether you believe it or not, Biene and I jumped into the lake for a very, very refreshing swim. Enjoy.

Such serenity and peace in your photo, Peter. I can see you and Biene swimming on a warm fall day. It was probably very refreshing!

Now we see what you meant about the unseasonably warm weather there in mid-October. In other years, how early have you seen frost or even a bit of freezing there?

How warm was the air temp? the water? You are hardy souls!!

Fairyland, especially the first photo, and brrrrr, the water must have been cold already. I might have put my feet in, but nothing more. 🙂

My first reaction to the swim was, “You’re crazy!” But I guess once you were in, it wasn’t too bad. I still have goosebumps just reading about it.

Just gorgeous! And you two were very brave to go swimming in that lake this time of year!

I couldn’t find any information about the water temperature there, but I know with certainty it was colder than the water off Galveston just now, which is holding at 25C! It’s a beautiful spot to warm up in after a swim.

The air temperature was a balmy 18C, but the water was around 12 (my guess).

I wonder what happened to the tree that is now just a stump in two of your photos.

Just like Arrow Lake, the river has been dammed to provide hydropower. So all the trees had to be cut. When the water level is low, many stumps become visible.
