Chapter 18 of the P. and G. Klopp Story – Part II

Joy at my Father’s Home

Right from the beginning of my visit Erna and I got along very well. Her cheerful and lively disposition did not allow me to lose myself in gloomy moods, as I was occasionally prone to do, especially during prolonged periods of idleness and aimlessness. I could even see, even though I was reluctant to admit it, that Erna was the right person for Father. She was the sunshine that had brought lightness and contentment to his sunset years. From her radiated a contagious joyous spirit that created the in-peace-with-the-world atmosphere so conducive to Father’s healing process from a torturous past, from which he only now began to recover. I definitely do not remember him as a man broken in body and spirit, as my distant cousin Eberhard Klopp described him in his book of the Klopp Family History.

Erna also had a moped of the same make and the same 49 cc class as mine, on which she would travel down the steep hill into the town of Schotten to buy the few things she needed for the small household in Michelbach. When there is company, one always seems to find the time to show off the beauty surrounding one’s home turf. Without visitors one tends to delay and leave such outings for another day. Erna was no exception. Now she was eager to travel with me to the nearby-forested hills, up the scenic Nature Park around Mount Vogelsberg, down winding country roads into the lush verdant valleys neatly tucked in between minor mountain ranges. There was no better form of transportation than our two mopeds. With a lunch pack clamped to the rear luggage rack we were ready to dart off into the wonderful Hessian landscape. Father a little overweight for these light machines gladly stayed behind looking after a few chores still to be done on this mini-farm with just a few goats to feed and milk,. Just as we were revving up the engines, Father came to the road to congenially shout over the noise, “Have a good trip!” At the end of my vacations thanks to our weekly excursions into the hill country, I had acquired a solid geographical knowledge of the region. As I was internally preparing myself to leave the Rhineland for good after my graduation, I had already created a new base to drop in as son and stepson, a place I could truly call home.

In the long summer evenings after supper we three would sit in the living room leisurely sipping homemade apple cider. We would talk until it was time to go to bed. More accurately speaking it was Erna, who did most of the talking. She truly had the gift of the gab. With the unerring memory for minutest details spiced up with colorful expressions and peppered with the melodious dialect of her village she was the born storyteller. I will never forget how she described the chaotic scene of the German Reichstag of the roaring twenties. She and her friends were sitting in the same living room forty years earlier and acted out the ugly political debates they had heard over the radio. And they did this with such exuberance, with so much mock yelling and screaming that the poor cats terrified by the brouhaha created by the inflammatory speeches sought refuge under the sofa and added to the parliamentary cacophony with much hissing and growling.

Raising his Family in West Prussia

Chart I – II

In 1905 Ferdinand married in the St. Mary’s Church of Thorn (today Polish Torun) his mother’s Polish maid. Her name was Rosalie Gronga (1877-1953). She was from Sampohl near Groß Konarcyzn, West Prussia. Her father owned a small farm and was at the same time at the service of the forestry department of Prussia. Ferdinand and Rosalie worked together a parcel of land similar in size and kind as mother Emma’s land in the vicinity.

Their daughters Margarethe and Charlotte were born there in 1906 and 1907 respectively. Then the family moved to Gostyn in the area south of Posen (today Polish Posnan), where they took over a dairy. Since Ferdinand had some expertise in the dairy business, he seized on an opportunity to get rid of the less profitable settler’s parcel at Elsenau.

The establishment of hundreds of estate dairies is directly connected to the years, when the byproducts of the sugar refineries and distilleries were intensively reprocessed for feed in the burgeoning cattle industry. In addition to this innovation the use of artificial fertilizers and the production of bone meal for fertilizing the meadows resulted in increased milk production among the successful cattle ranchers. Daughter Gertrud was born here in 1908. At the same time brother-in-law August and sister Rosa lived in Gostyn. This is a definite indication that at least in part, family connections were the cause for the resettlement.

Why I live in Paris

For one semester I wanted to go to Paris and had booked a flight for August 29, 2006. unfortunately, I arrived at the airport on August 30. I missed my plane and booking a another flight would have been incredibly expensive. So I decided to take the bus instead. On the day in the evening I boarded the bus and arrived in Paris on the Saturday of September 2. For the first little while I was supposed to stay with a friend of my friend’s father, who lived in the northern suburb of Paris.

Having been sitting in the bus all through the night I was pretty tired. Nevertheless we drove all the way to the southern part of Paris, where there was an impossible disco. There was also Régis, because an acquaintance of his wanted to go there too. He too thinks that the disco is impossible.

Well, there we met for the first time. I spoke very poor French, but we made arrangements for a date to meet the very next day at 3 p.m. “au pied de la Concorde” without exchanging our telephone numbers. And indeed we both showed up the very next day. Régis showed me Paris and since then we have been a couple for almost ten years and have two wonderful children.

On my Moped to Father in Michelbach

It doesn’t matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was.

My Father in front of Erna’s House in Michelbach near Schotten

It had been more than five years, since I had seen Father. He had left one day looking for work at friends and relatives. Considering his poor health and age, he was faced with the dilemma of having to return to Wesel, where he would be dependent on Aunt Mieze’s financial support or else be content with the odd casual work, which barely supported his livelihood. Furthermore considering his intensive pride as a former successful agricultural administrator and the pain he must have suffered from the dismal failure of his farming venture in Southern Germany, I can understand his anguish and feelings of having become utterly worthless in his own eyes and in the eyes of his family. Pride and failure have never been good bedfellows in a man’s heart, and Father was no exception. As for me, I missed his presence a lot, but I was too timid to ask as to when he would come back and did not know what was going on behind the scenes. Much later I found out that with Uncle Günther’s support Mother had initiated divorce proceedings. On the basis of the law that required common residence and conjugal relations Mother was able to get a divorce in exchange for waiving any rights to financial support from Father. So to make this sad and depressing story short, Father after the divorce joined and not long afterwards married Erna Krämer, an old acquaintance from the Warthegau days, who lived in her rustic and cozy home in the village of Michelbach at the foot of Mount Vogelsberg north of Frankfurt.

The last summer holidays before graduation were only a few weeks away. It was also to be the last year Mother and Aunt Mieze would reside in Wesel. Uncle Günther and Aunt Lucie had invited them to live with them in Watzenborn-Steinberg (now Pohlheim), where all four would share the rent of a brand-new house that had been built by a teacher as a retirement home in the distant future. Naturally there was a lot of joyful excitement among the three Kegler siblings having been raised together at the parsonage in Grünewald and now having the chance of living once more under one roof. There was just one problem. How would I fit into the grand plan of bringing the family members together? A transfer to a high school in another province with different graduation requirements was out of the question. The solution was an obvious one. I had to stay behind and continue my studies later on in the fall, while they would move to the land of the Hessians. The decision to finish my secondary education in Wesel proved to become one of the great milestones and turning points of my life.

Twenty-year Old Peter

But for now at the beginning of the six-week break from school I had other things on my mind. I had to think of visiting Father. One of my old scout buddies sold me his moped for DM 50.00, a true bargain at the equivalent of ten monthly allowances. It had a peppy engine and in spite of being quite old was in excellent shape. The best part was that I did not need a driver’s license. Having always envied Klaus for his scooter, I now had my very own motorized transportation with which I could travel to Michelbach to see Father and his new wife Erna.

Philosophical Discussions with my Father

At a maximum speed of 50 km/h it took me all day to reach the scenic hill country around Mount Vogelsberg. Father and Erna gave me a warm welcome alleviating immediately all fear that Father might have turned into a stranger. I had departed from Wesel with these somber feelings, which had been building up due in part to our long separation, but also due to Mother’s bitter and regretful remarks that she had sometimes made about the divorce. So it was a great relief to be greeted so cordially and be welcomed as son and friend into their cozy old farmhouse. Here then I was going to spend the next six weeks, would become reacquainted with a rural environment slightly reminiscent of Rohrdorf, would get to know Father more closely through our philosophical and historical discussions, would begin to like his wife, would be introduced to her friends and relatives in the village, would taste her hearty meals albeit a little too rich in fat, in short I was here to relax and feel completely at home in an atmosphere of genuine friendliness and camaraderie.

On a Special Mission to the United States of America

It cannot be stated with certainty whether Ferdinand’s father kicked his son out of the house or whether Mother Emma sent him on a special mission to the USA. In 1900 Ferdinand arrived there and spent almost five years in Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. Ferdinand’s job was to research the market for the usefulness of American varieties of flour and to arrange for their purchase and export to Wolmirstedt, Germany. The mission appears to coincide with the planned acquisition of the water mill at Zielitz. Widow Emma was perhaps calculating improved marketing chances for her business.

But Ferdinand was developing his own life plans. he became engaged to an American woman, which indicated that he may have had plans to stay in the US. But the engagement did not work out, primarily because his mother from the Old Country was pleading for his assistance. For the first time in his life ‘outcast’ Ferdinand was needed on the home front.

He now saw himself in the role of a “savior in times of need”, returned from the US and acted accordingly at the Wolmirstedt house in June, 1905. The relations with his eldest brother Friedrich worsened and soon reached the boiling point resulting in a state of constant enmity between the two brothers and their families. Incapable of carrying on with the rope making business in this poisoned atmosphere, Ferdinand reluctantly or rather craftily passed on the factory to his brother. He did this without being clear about the ownership question with regard to the inheritance of the property. He most likely left that critical question deliberately open in collusion with Emma. When Ferdinand followed his mother to Elsenau, West Prussia (now Poland), in 1905, the property and inheritance question was left precariously hanging in the air.

No Longer a Bachelor: A Little Love Story

How I Met Lisa

Klopp Family Tree – Chart I – IV

I have never been more thankful to go out for a round of beers after golf than that night. I had just finished, what I am sure was the best round of golf I have ever played and was feeling pretty happy about breaking 80. When my golf buddies asked me to go to the local watering hole, I thought, “I deserve a celebratory pint”. While waiting for the finishing touches of my Guinness to be poured, I saw her. I had seen her once or twice before but had never done anything about it. Considering how well I played that day I thought perhaps luck was on my side.IMG_1316

It was after high school when I moved to Victoria to attend the university. My first few years were like many others I am sure, floundering around with little focus. I somehow narrowed my field and wound up with a bachelor of science in economics.  I had managed to put my self through school with some interesting jobs along the way (I will save those stories for another time). After university, I actually found a job in my field, which allowed me to stay in Victoria.   Enough about that, let’s get back to the love story.

So there I was a 40 year old successful business man with a blossoming golf game enjoying my pint when she sat down next to me.  It turned out she had just finished her shift and my buddy Guy (a regular at the pub) asked her to join us. There she was sitting on the stool next to me making idol chitchat. It didn’t take long to learn she was as sweet as she looked. She was working as a server at the pub and the Empress Hotel while attending university for nursing. It was clear she loved her family, her friends and enjoyed a good laugh. For those of you who don’t know me, I am usually a little shy at first but with her it was easy. We talked all night. It was a bit of cliché how many things we had in common. Good food, wine, traveling and the outdoors. But alas the night ended and we went our separate ways. I remember thinking to myself she was amazing but for some reason I didn’t get her number.

It was about a week later and things were back to normal, me moving numbers around on a spreadsheet with breaks to practice my golf swing until I received a note from my friend Guy with her number. It was probably a few days later when I contacted her and we were going on a date.

We dated for a while seeing each other a few times a week. I would make Tuesday night dinners. Something new and delicious each week to keep her intrigued, not to mention it was so nice to cook for someone other than myself.  It went on for a while like that, seeing each other a few times a week. Since things were going so well we decided to try our blossoming relationship on the road and headed to the Oregon coast. The coast was stunning and we enjoyed our time together. Campfires on the beach and counting stars were the perfect setting for a new love. It was not long after, when I could no longer say I was living the bachelor life.

IMG_1318
Fast-forward to this year we decided to buy a house together in the beautiful Oak Bay area. It is a charming 1931 house with heaps of charm. There is an established garden with grapes, strawberries and new blooms every week. We have been very lucky to have about half of the Klopp clan come to stay and we are hoping the rest will come this year. We are lucky to have Lisa’s family so near because we are able to have family dinners including this past Christmas dinner. It was really great this Christmas because I received the ultimate gift, I proposed to Lisa and she accepted.

I hope you enjoyed this little story of how I met the love of my life. The Klopp family is lucky to have such a wonderful addition.
