Fresh New Look after the Rain

Last week my wife and I paid a return visit to one of our favourite outlooks overlooking the Lower Arrow Lake. After a long dry spell so early in the spring season, Nature was quite a bit behind. But now it had a new fresh look after a much needed rain. Apart from capturing the landscape in the clear air with the clouds forming a dramatic background, my focus was on the colourful flowers and bushes that attracted my attention. The pictures turned out to be so stunning and beautiful that I make no apologies for going over my limit of five photos per post. Enjoy.

Arnica Flowers at the Kalamalka Lake

Last week my wife needed to visit the optometrist for a new pair of reading glasses. We travelled west, and on the way to Kelowna. We stopped at the outlook parking spot on Highway 97 south of Vernon. The spectacular sight tempted me to go beyond the dedicated area. I climbed down a steep embankment where I enjoyed looking at several unobstructed landscape scenes. The icing on the cake were several clusters of arnica flowers covering the dry hillside of the Okanagan Valley. They cover like floral carpets large areas of the hills west of our Arrow Lakes. Enjoy.

Happy New Year

My wife and I had a very peaceful and relaxing Christmas. Even though it was a bit lonely because our children could not travel and visit us due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we made the best of it by going out for our daily walks. You guessed it we also took our cameras along. On Christmas Eve our five sons, their spouses and our five grandchildren got together on a Zoom conference. While it was not like a real family reunion we enjoyed seeing each other and did some old-fashioned carolling. It felt good to take some time off from blogging although I was sometimes tempted to peek into the posts of all my blogging friends. Here are a few of my pictures I had taken on our walks in and around our little village. Enjoy.

A Grey November Day

It is hard to imagine that some people could like a grey November day. But pampered by so much sunshine for so many days in a row, my wife and I felt very adventurous and decided to go for walk along the shore of our beloved Arrow Lake. Walking through the woods, we found some mushrooms posing to be photographed. At the shore we discovered more of nature’s art work, a head sculpture in the water, interesting driftwood shapes, and tall golden grasses. Even when totally clouded over, our lake, valley and mountains look beautiful. Enjoy.

Here is a funny puzzle that recently emerged from my childhood memories. My mother who had never learned Latin in school asked me one day for a translation of the following phrase by an obscure Roman writer. Di currentum serum. If you have a solid background in the German language, you will be able to crack this nutty puzzle.

Of Driftwood, Roots and Landscape Impressions

Last week I indulged in capturing a hover-fly feasting on the pollen of a daisy. On that same canoe trip, I could not resist taking photos of a driftwood sculpture and a beautifully shaped root formation laid bare by the constantly rising and falling lake level. Also the first rose hips have made their appearance, a sure sign that the fall season is upon us. Enjoy.

The sculpture would make a scary ghost on Halloween Night.
This was once a mighty tree before the flooding of the lake more than 50 yers ago.
Even on a dreary day the landscape exudes tranquillity and peacefulness.
Nothing here to disturb the peace.
The rose hips of the Alberta wild rose have made their first appearance.

Still in the Grip of Winter

While day time temperatures have been climbing above the freezing mark, there is no real sign of spring except for a few tulips on the south side of our home, where they had come up with a few leaves to test for spring-like conditions. But the longer days adorned by plenty of sunshine and a splendidly blue sky make up for the snow and ice still present in the Arrow Lakes region, Here are the most recent photos of our excursions around the lakeshore.
