On Sunday we had a brilliant, almost cloudless sky. So, half an hour before sunset, we quickly drove down to the Fauquier boat dock, hoping to find a few interesting objects to photograph in the setting sun. The Alberta wild rose was literally aflame in the late evening setting. A daisy in a dense carpet of like flowers also attracted my attention. The weeds in the remaining moments looked glorious. We all heard about the devastating effects forest fires can have on wildlife and humans. The destruction of homes and entire communities was horrific especially this summer. It also appears that the fires become more frequent and more destructive with each new year. However, it is easy to forget that there is a positive side to nature’s rebellion against humanity. The wildfires are also a form of cleansing creating new feeding grounds and much needed habitats for wildlife, and getting rid of pests and diseases from ailing forests. For the photographer, wildfires are also the cause of spectacular sunsets. Here are a few examples from the past few years from my archives. Enjoy.
My wife and I had a very peaceful and relaxing Christmas. Even though it was a bit lonely because our children could not travel and visit us due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we made the best of it by going out for our daily walks. You guessed it we also took our cameras along. On Christmas Eve our five sons, their spouses and our five grandchildren got together on a Zoom conference. While it was not like a real family reunion we enjoyed seeing each other and did some old-fashioned carolling. It felt good to take some time off from blogging although I was sometimes tempted to peek into the posts of all my blogging friends. Here are a few of my pictures I had taken on our walks in and around our little village. Enjoy.
Whether you believe it or not after a very wet spring the grasses along the edge of the Fauquier Golf Course grew up to two metres tall. Since I prefer the landscape format in photography there was no way that I was able to capture their full height. But I was generally very pleased with the results, especially with the setting sun shining through the luscious stalks. The bumblebee feasting on a wildflower – I am sure my blogging friend Steve would know its name – was the icing on the cake. Enjoy.
My wife and I travelled to Vancouver to attend our son’s wedding at the Vancouver Rowing Club. On Sunday after the wedding my wife and I spent some time at the English Bay, where many people were going for a late evening stroll to watch the sunset. Here I posted a few of my impressions of this very popular beach area. Enjoy.
Although our Beautiful British Columbia had been plagued this summer by a terrible heat wave and dry spell causing devastating wild fires, our community was lucky. The few fires caused by lightning were quickly put out. However, the smoke in the air was often so dense that one could not see the mountains across the lake. In spite of the eerie gloom in the air, there were moments when nature granted glimpses into its amazing beauty.
